I was in the mood for some down home cooking and decided to look up a few places that are close by. This place came up as an option. I decided why not try it out. It is a small place with only a few seats. It is mainly take out. The gentleman behind the counter was great. Very friendly and attentive. We decided to eat at one if the few tables. I had the smothered chicken with greens, Mac and cheese. I also decided on some old school Faygo Red pop. Just had to have one. It was good but not the best I've had. It was not as seasoned as expected. Good but not "Knock your socks off" kind of meal. Would I go back? Yes. The main points is that it is close, friendly and was some good food.

3.5 stars, better than average. Family-run place. Very friendly, helpful family. We arrived around 6pm - they close at 8pm - and they were out of Collard Greens. Noooooooo! Dang it, I love greens...and actually grade pass or fail for the whole place on their greens. Next time. We ordered the two chicken breast meal, fried, and the fried catfish dinner. My sides were cornbread dressing (moist and squishy, just as I like it) and green beans (recommended by them, with what I think was smoked turkey in it - loved them and their spicy pot likker). Ken's sides were Mac and cheese and fried okra (both of which were average). Our meals took at least 10 minutes to come up, because they cooked the meats to order. I am more than willing to wait however long it takes for a place to make my food fresh! The chicken breasts were juicy and huge, and the breading was thin, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The catfish fillets were on the thin side, but the cornmeal breading was seasoned well and not greasy. They had very few drink options - a couple cans of soda (I mean like 3 cans of soda in the whole cooler) and some bottled water...so we had to get Watermelon Cherry Kool Aid. That huge foam cup of Kool Aid made the meal for me. I meant to take pictures. I had 10 minutes of reminding Ken to remind me to take pictures. My phone was on the table to remind me! The food arrives, and we dive in. No pictures...sorry. Clean interior (didn't use the restroom). View of the open kitchen. Sufficient parking in their lot west of the restaurant.

I decide to just go for it - it wasn't bad at all. I highly suggest requesting LEMON PEPPER on your chicken (if you select that type of meat) - it isn't really heavy seasoned so if you don't ask for the extra seasoning, then it might taste a little blend. I was looking for a soul food place near me and lucky i found it - there was a continute traffic of people coming in and out. I ordered two 4pc whole wing dinners which comes with two sides and 1 corn bread muffin. I wanted to get away from always going to KFC and the prices wasn't bad at all - my grandfather KILLED his dinner and i couldn't finish mine. Reviewing sides: Candy Yams = they were good Cole Slaw = PASS (too runny) Mac n' cheese = OK Mash potatoes w/gravy = they were good. The next time I'll visit for the desserts - they had banana pudding. (Yummy!)

Quickie review. Actually probably 3-1/2 stars because of the limited drink options, but since Liz R. gave it 4 I figured I'd average it out. Hope that's OK Liz. Anyway, as most have said, the people are friendly, the place is clean, and the food is good. I spent more than I planned because I forgot to say that I wanted the "small plate" lunch ($7.99) when I placed my order. I knew when he gave me the total that I had made the mistake but screw it, I was hungry. So, conmeal crusted pork chops: This is southern food people, so it's cooked until it's done. But the crust was light, the chop not overly dry, and a little hot sauce goes a long way. I'd say 2-1/2 stars. Collards and cabbage: at first I couldnt decide which one I wanted, then looked down slightly further on the menu and saw you could get a mixture. Pure genius. I give 'em a 4.5 Cornbread dressing and gravy: Perfect sage, moist even without the gravy, nicely seasoned. The only thing wrong with it is that it wasn't my mom's. 4 stars. This is the first time I've been glad I-96 is closed because it made me drive down Plymouth to get to Telegraph. I didn't actuall get to Telegraph. Anyway, I think I'll go back next week and try the meatloaf.

So today I decided to head over to Soul Food Express for lunch, for the first time. Before I was even finished crossing the parking lot, I knew I was going to have a great meal, just from the smell coming from the building. Once in, I scanned the menu, asked a fellow diner which sides she would recommend and she said the Greens and Mac 'n Cheese. I ordered the 3 piece Dark Chicken (smothered) with a Corn muffin, Greens, and Mac 'n Cheese. I was told my food would take about 15 minutes to be cooked and it was done in just about that time. Once I got my order to go, I headed on home. The smell wafting from the container was tempting me to pull over sooner then home, but I kept on truckin', The corn muffin unfortunately didn't make it home. It was moist, but need a bit more sweetness to it. When home, I opened the lid on some of the best looking Soul Food I have seen in quite sometime. The Mac 'n Cheese was just the right amount of cheesy and gooey. The Greens were flavorful, tender and had bits of meat in them. The Chicken...wow, the Chicken was tender and juicy, but I now wished I hadn't ordered them smothered in gravy. I missed out on the crisp of the fried coating...lesson learned. Oh, the gravy! Gravy was tasty, a bit salty for my liking, but it didn't stop me from spooning up the last of it out of the container. Overall, very good soul food. Would I go again, Yes...especial with the other coupon I have to use. Would I get the gravy again, maybe...but on the side.

This isn't for food or service but I believe they went out of business. Went there today at 1 pm and the place looked shut down and deserted. Called business - no answer. Went to website it's outdated and no info regarding hours or such. Bummed because it was a drive to get over there. :( I had a craving for soul food

The food is cooked to order so it is nice and hot. The food had a lot of flavor. The service was good and the cook was friendly. The reason for the 4 stars in stead of 5 was do to the fact of the limited beverages at the time of my visit they only had bottled water and 3 flavors of pop. We will definitely return!

Very nice and clean environment. I usually order the baked chicken, yams and greens which is awesome! I really don't care for the Mac and cheese. Hopefully they work on a new recipe. Also the turkey chops are really good!

Have been here a few times!! Food's always good and pretty quick. They do seem to be out of one thing or another everytime we call, though. Changing variety of housemade desserts that always look good. Some tables and a TV while you're waiting, or for if you want to eat there.
